Pricing & buying
What happens if you stop paying for your website builder?
On Wix, your site drops back to a free Wix address with Wix ads, and your own domain is disconnected. On Squarespace, the site goes offline after a 15-day grace period, and its content may be unrecoverable after about 30 days. On either, you can't take the site with you: it only exists on that platform.
Wix: the site stays, your domain and features don't
According to Wix's help centre, when a Premium plan expires the site isn't deleted. It reverts to a free Wix web address, shows Wix ads, loses premium features like accepting payments, and any custom domain connected to it is disconnected. To get it back, you upgrade again and reconnect the domain.
Wix also says its sites can't be exported to another host, because they run on Wix's own technology. If you want to leave Wix, you rebuild the site elsewhere.
Squarespace: the site goes offline
Squarespace's help centre says a failed payment gets a 15-day grace period, after which the site expires and goes offline. You can usually reactivate it by subscribing again, but if a site has been expired for more than about 30 days, its content may be permanently deleted.
Squarespace has an export tool, but it covers only some content types. Check its export article for what comes across before you rely on it.
Other builders, and your domain
Most builders, GoDaddy's included, work the same basic way: the site lives on their platform, so it's only online while the plan is paid. Read your own plan's terms for the specifics.
Your domain is usually billed separately from your website plan. Letting the plan lapse doesn't cancel a domain you registered through the builder, and letting the domain lapse doesn't cancel the plan. Keep track of both, and remember email on that domain stops working if the domain does.

How to leave a builder safely
Or skip the subscription question entirely. With a site you own outright, there's no plan to lapse: Launch72 builds custom sites for a flat $499, hosting is free for life, and the only recurring cost is your domain (~$15/yr).
- Before cancelling, copy out your text and download your photos and logo.
- Note where your domain is registered and when it renews.
- Check what else the plan covers: email, an online store, booking or payments.
- Get the new site live and point your domain at it first, then cancel.

Will my Wix site be deleted if I stop paying?
According to Wix, no. It reverts to a free Wix site with Wix ads and a Wix web address, and your custom domain is disconnected.
Can I move my Wix site to another host?
Not as-is. Wix says its sites can't be exported to other hosts, so moving means rebuilding. Your text, images and domain can come with you.
